What is Sea Glass? - SwellColors Glass Studio

Sea Glass is is basically broken glass that has been tumbled by the ocean or lake water to become smoothed and frosted looking.  Wave action, sand, and time all work together to make the glass have the rich and soft look so many beachcombers look for while out wandering the shoreline.

There are many types of glass that find their way into the water only to become sea glass (beach glass). For example, glass was widely used for beverages of all kinds. Glass was also used for perfumes and storage of chemicals and to make stained glass windows. Automobile lights, transformers, and lenses were also made of glass. Fishermen used to make floats for their nets from old sake bottles using the furnaces on their boats.  Ultimately, any type of glass can become sea glass. The difference is that sea glass is found on the beach.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for people who love to find these little treasures), many of the remains of these objects have found their way into our oceans. Years later, lucky people find the glass while walking along shorelines.  For many, this is a addictive treasure hunt.

And now even more lucky people bring that glass to SwellColors Glass Studio to have their treasure turned into beautiful, heirloom quality, solid sterling silver jewelry such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings by our skilled artisans.
